Year in Review:1993
The Year in Review essay gave me the foundation that I needed to complete the rest of the assignments for the course. The assignment was to research a year from 1945 to 2000. I chose 1993 because I wanted to choose a year that I was alive for. I enjoyed working on this assignment because I got to pick the things that I felt were most significant about the year. I researched and wrote about topics like the first bombing of the World Trade Center, NAFTA, and the inauguration of President Clinton. I think I did a great job at finding a variety of sources to use in my research. I could have done a better job elaborating on topics more and giving more details, which I did learn to do in future assignments.
Best of the Web: The Late Twentieth Century
This project was a group assignment to create a webpage containing links to great web pages about some topics in the era that the group represented. My era was from 1968 to 1993, so the group chose topics like star wars, NAFTA, and the Vietnam War to provide links to. The group allocated our responsibilities very well, playing on the strengths of each person in the group. I, in addition to finding websites and writing annotations about them, specialized in the web design and lead the group in creating the actual web page where we would share our project. This project taught me to let go of all of the responsibilities and allow other people to do some of the work and shine at what they are good at, a skill that helped me a lot in the Era in Review Documentary project.
Trip to the Newseum: Photos
Our class took a trip to the Newseum, a museum about news and media in Washington, D.C. On our trip we saw many amazing artifacts and exhibits. We wrote a journal about our reactions to each of the exhibits that we went to. My favorite exhibit in particular featured artifacts and news stories from Hurricane Katrina. I traveled about the Newseum with the same group that I worked on the group assignments with in the course. This gave me the opportunity to develop a better working relationship with these people and to learn about their interests and their ideas.
Narrative Podcast: The 1993 Bombing of the World Trade Center
The narrative podcast was an assignment to create a script for a podcast about one event that occurred during the year of your choosing, and then create an audio podcast about the event. The event that I found the most interesting in my year was the first bombing of the World Trade Center. I had already researched this event, but I did some more research to find more stories and details about this tragic event. I found this script to be enjoyable to write because I was really passionate and interested in the topic that I chose. The creation of the actual podcast was a challenge. Learning how to use Garage Band was tricky and at times frustrating, but this assignment really gave me an opportunity to learn a new skill that I will need in the future.
Film Analysis Essay: The Nightmare Before Christmas
The film analysis essay was a huge challenge. The assignment was to relate a film released in your year to an element of culture. The film that I chose was Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas and the cultural element that I chose was class. I used the different classes and the conflicts depicted in the film to relate to the issues that North America was facing at the time due to the passage of NAFTA. The major challenge of this project was using peer reviewed sources. It was a challenge to find articles that had the information that I needed, but also fit the criteria of the assignment. Although the assignment was difficult, I am very satisfied with the way that it turned out and I am glad that I was pushed beyond my normal limits to create something more analytical and less informational.
Era in Review Documentary: The Latter Half of the Twentieth Century
This assignment was to create a movie with the group that captured the zeitgeist of our era. This was the most fun project that we worked on throughout the course. We chose to create a more serious documentary focusing on the Cold War and foreign policy. First we collectively created a script and story board. Next, we filmed the footage in the media commons studio. Finally, we edited the film using iMovie. One mistake that I made when working on the movie was underestimating the amount of time that editing would take. I thought it would only took a few hours, but it wound up taking much longer. Luckily, I had plenty of time to edit the film and took the extra time to make sure that the documentary turned out exactly the way we wanted it. Overall I am very proud of the way the movie turned out and I think we did a great job of creating an informational film.
